We are so lucky to have access to Hands-On Science Kits here in Rutherford County. These are hands-on experimental discovery kits based upon our science standards. In second grade, we receive the following kits:
- Butterflies: Students observe the life cycle of painted lady butterflies. Each student receives a larvae and gets to watch it grow to an adult. This kit coincides with our study of animal life cycles.
- Soils: Students observe the properties of different types of soils. They learn which soils are good for growing plants through hands-on investigations. This kit coincides with our study of plant life cycles and earth's resources.
- Changes: Students observe the properties of solids, liquids, and gases, which are introduced through a series of experiments. This kit coincides with our study of matter.
- Balancing and Weighing: Students observe the physical properties of solid objects. They explore the concept of measurement through a series of experiments using balance scales. This kit coincides with our study of measurement in math.
